Auto Expo 2018: Kia Makes Official India Debut With SP SUV Concept

India's newest automotive manufacturer is finally officially in India. Kia Motors showcased its full range at a massive display of design and engineering prowess at the 2018 Indian Auto Expo. And at the center - the brand new Kia SP SUV Concept making its global debut! The Kia SP Concept is an SUV concept that is roughly similar to the Hyundai Creta in size and will most likely be based on the same platform and get the same internal bits as its Hyundai counterpart does. The Kia SP SUV concept will see a production version sometime next year when Kia Motors India officially starts production and sales of its cars in mid-2019.

The SP SUV concept - showcased here in a bright orange and white combination (white and a bright pastel color seems to be the theme at the 2018 Indian Auto Expo) is quite the looker. It gets the Kia family grille that has been enhanced and made even more aggressive. The SP SUV concept also gets a set of new edgy headlamps that have two design elements - on top a slimmer edgier running light and a larger illumination element on the bottom - that is flanked by the grille. At the rear, the SP SUV concept is somewhat similar to the likes of the Creta and also takes inspiration from the Sportage SUV in terms of the tail light design. The SUV also features wide wheel arches with large wheels, a typically SUVesque skid plate design on the front and rear bumper. The SP SUV concept also features a two tone design that doesn't look forced on and looks like it was a part of the design process. The SP Concept - when it makes it to production soon - will go up against the likes of the Hyundau Creta and the Renault Captur. Expect it to get the 1.6-litre diesel engine and the new 1-litre direct injection motor used by Kia globally

Nissan Motors may make budget e-cars in India, cheapest with Rs 700,000

Source: Business Standard
The company wants to sell e-cars with significant volumes in India and manufacture locally Nissan Motor Company may start manufacturing all-electric-cars in India with the price being considered at around Rs 700,000 (Rs 7 lakh) or $10,000 upwards, the cheapest globally.

This will also make the least expensive private e-vehicle in India, even cheaper than Mahindra and Mahindra's e20.

According to the Nissan's Global Director for electric cars, Nicholas Thomas, if the company wants to sell e-cars with significant volumes in India, it has to manufacture locally, The Times of India reported.

The Japanese car-maker is also considering exporting India-made electric vehicles and selling it to other Asian countries for huge profits due to India's inexpensive manufacturing process.

When asked how soon the project will start, Thomas said the company is keeping an eye on the growth of e-vehicles and that Indian government needs to come up with clarity on having electric cars. The Indian government did not provide any clear map of having electric cars by 2030, he added.

Talking about the cost, Thomas said though the price of the batteries has gone down it may still take some more years to reach the affordable level. Until then, the company needs subsidies from the government to promote the sale and mass adoption of the e-vehicles or the shift to cleaner vehicles will take much more time.

The Nissan Leaf, one of the most successful e-cars which has sold over 300,000 vehicles, is priced above $30,000 in the US. According to TOI report, getting the car to India will charge the company additional cumulative duties of around 200 per cent, making it unviable.

The company may sell the Leaf in India but does not wish to manufacture it locally.
