ASEAN-spec Honda Civic revealed

The Civic for Southeast Asian markets will share its styling and most of its mechanicals with the all-new model on sale in the US.
Honda revealed the all-new, tenth-generation Honda Civic in September 2015 followed by the Civic Coupe in November. The company is now developing an ASEAN-spec model for launch in Southeast Asian markets with a prototype being spotted in Thailand.

Honda Thailand has also released images of the tenth-gen model wearing an RS badge, with large alloy wheels and a tail-gate mounted rear spoiler. The ASEAN-spec Civic, seen in the images, retains the styling of its US-spec sibling with its low, wide stance and Honda’s flying ‘H’ front end design.

Like its US-spec sibling, the ASEAN-spec car will use Honda’s new 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine though output will be down and will develop 170bhp as against the US model's 203bhp. The second engine on offer will be a naturally aspirated 1.8-litre petrol motor. The engines will be paired to a choice of a manual or CVT gearbox.

Features such as LED headlamps, dual-zone climate control, powered front seats, adaptive cruise control and a touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are likely to be carried forward from the US-spec model.

Honda discontinued the Civic in India citing decline in demand, the lack of a diesel engine and shrinking market share of the D-segment sedans. It is unconfirmed if Honda has any plans to reintroduce the sedan here, with this tenth-generation model.

Honda is also developing a Civic hatchback for the European markets with a concept model set to make its debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2016.

Renault Duster Easy R AMT launch next month

The SUV gets cosmetic tweaks and an AMT gearbox; dealers offering discounts of upto Rs 1 lakh on current model.
Renault is expected to launch the facelifted Duster in India around the end of March, following the India-spec model’s debut at the Auto Expo 2016.

The 2016 edition of the popular compact SUV features cosmetic changes such as revised headlamps and tail-lamps, new front bumper and grille and new design alloy wheels, making the exterior similar to the Brazilian Duster facelift revealed last year.

The India-spec Duster facelift will also become the first Renault model to be offered with an AMT gearbox. The Easy-R AMT gearbox, which was displayed by Renault’s sister brand Dacia at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show, will be offered instead of the DCT auto gearbox. According to company sources, though the DCT would have offered a smoother drive than the AMT, the former's cost would have pushed the SUV's price further by around Rs 2 lakh. The Duster Easy-R AMT will come only with the Duster 110PS version.

Additional features on the Duster facelift include re-styled roof rails, power folding wing mirrors, navigation system, automatic climate control, rear view camera, auto up/down windows and cruise control.

In terms of pricing, the facelifted Duster is set to cost a significant premium over the current model with the AMT version. It is yet to be confirmed whether Renault will be launching the AMT Duster alongside the manual or at a later date. With the launch of the facelifted Duster expected by end of March, dealers are offering discounts of upto Rs 1 lakh on the current model, in a possible bid to clear out existing stocks.

All-new Skoda Superb launch on Feb 23, 2016

After innumerable spy shots of the car and a subtle official teaser campaign, Skoda India has officially announced February 23, 2016 as the launch date of the all-new Skoda Superb. The new Superb will sit atop Skoda India's model range and is likely to command a premium over the outgoing generation. For reference, the outgoing Superb is priced between Rs. 22.13 - 26.83 lakh ex-showroom Delhi.

In India, the Superb is likely to be powered by a 1.8-litre TSI petrol and a 2.0 TDI diesel engine offered with manual and DSG gearboxes. The car will come with front wheel drive across the range. The car's feature list includes three zone climate control, a sliding and tilting panoramic sunroof, rain and light sensors, power adjustable front seats, park assist, a rear view camera and a 6.5" touchscreen infotainment display that supports MirrorLink, Android Auto & Apple CarPlay.

As it stands, the Toyota Camry is the Superb's only direct rival, but by virtue of its expected pricing, the car could also be a threat to smaller luxury sedans such as the Audi A3 and Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class.

New JLR trademarks hint at future electric models

The trademark applications suggest that Jaguar Land Rover’s first electric vehicles could be called the I-Pace and I-Type.
Jaguar Land Rover has filed trademark applications for the I-Pace, I-Type and Velar, two of which are expected to be electric models.

The British company is already known to be working on a new range of electric vehicles and its first all-electric model will be an SUV. This model is expected to take the I-Pace name for production. It will incorporate styling from the C-X75 hypercar, and is reported to offer a range of around 482.80km. Sources suggest that the all-electric SUV could use electric motors mounted at each corner.

The SUV is likely to be revealed at this year’s Paris Motor Show in October, before going on sale in 2017. When launched, the electric SUV will rival the Tesla Model X, Audi Q6 e-tron and Volvo’s planned electric version of the XC90, which is due in 2019.

The second trademark, I-Type, hints at an all-electric version of the F-Type sportscar. However, it could also be used for electric versions of the XE and XJ sedans.

Additionally, Jaguar Land Rover also filed a trademark application for the Velar name. The name has been previously used on the original Range Rover prototypes in 1969, which suggests that the badge may be used on an upcoming version of the luxury SUV.
