One millionth third-gen Skoda Octavia produced

The Octavia is branded as the most successful Skoda ever, and has achieved production of five million units since its launch in 1996.

Skoda has rolled out its one millionth third-generation Octavia from its main factory in Mladá Boleslav. The model was introduced in 1996, and the Czech carmaker has produced five million Octavias until now. Identified as the most successful Skoda ever, the third-generation model was launched in 2013 and underscores the success of the vehicle in international markets.

In addition to production in the Czech Republic, the Octavia runs off the assembly lines in China, Russia, India and Kazakhstan. As the carmaker’s largest individual market, China plays a crucial role for both the brand and the model. The Octavia was launched in China in May 2014. Since then, the compact-class vehicle has been produced at SAIC Volkswagen’s factory in Ningbo. In 2015 alone, 4,32,300 vehicles from the Octavia model series were sold around the world, which is around 11 percent more than the previous year. Between January and February 2016, 70,500 Octavias have been sold.

In India, the model has been among the most popular ones for the company and is the second most-sold car after the fake rolex watches Rapid. Available with the option of  two petrol engines and one diesel engine in the country, Skoda sold 6,097 third-gen Octavias since its launch in October 2013.

Rumour: New Hyundai Elantra to be launched in India this year

Earlier this year, we had reported that Hyundai has started testing the sixth-generation Elantra sedan in India. According to a media report, the company is planning to launch the car in mid-2016.

The new Elantra was unveiled in Korea in September 2015. It measures 4,570 mm in length, 1,800 mm in width and 1,440 mm in height. This makes it 40 mm longer, 25 mm wider and 30 mm shorter than the fifth-generation model. At 2,700 mm, the wheelbase of the car remains unchanged.

The car has coupe-like styling with a large hexagonal grille, projector headlamps and fog lamps located in boomerang-shaped housings. At the rear, is a pair of new tail light clusters and a restyled bumper & boot. The car also gets redesigned alloy wheels.

In international markets, the Elantra is available with a choice of three engines - 1.6-litre petrol, 2.0-litre petrol and 1.6-litre diesel. The sale replica watches UK petrol engines come with 6-speed manual and automatic transmissions, while the diesel gets a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic.

Royal Enfield Himalayan goes on sale in Delhi

Royal Enfield has launched the new Himalayan adventure motorcycle at Rs 1,73,676 (on-road Delhi). During the national launch, the Himlayan wasnt sold in Delhi as it isn’t BS-IV emission norms compliant as set as a benchmark for any new two-wheeler to be launched in the capital city by Delhi Transport Department

Lots of auto journalists were left curious at the launch of the Royal Enfield Himalayan in Mumbai few backs week. The reason for their inquisitiveness was the fact that pricing for Delhi wasn’t announced while the same for other metro cities were shared. On further probing the Royal Enfield officials we found out that the Himalayan will not go on sale in the capital city of our country. The reasoning given for the above was that Delhi Transport Department doesn’t give approval for launch of new two-wheelers that aren’t BS-IV emission norms compliant. While the BS-IV emission norms for two-wheelers will come in effect from April, 2017 nationally, the Delhi government has decided recently that only BS-IV norms approved new two-wheelers can go on sale. 

The above news came as a setback for RE enthusiasts in Delhi who could only see the new adventure tourer offering at dealerships but weren’t able to take test ride or purchase it. Gladly though things have changed for the better as the new Himalayan will be officially available in the capital city. Royal Enfield launched the Himalayan at Rs 1,73,676 (on-road Delhi) and bookings for the bike has also started. 

Announcing the price, Rudratej (Rudy) Singh, President Royal Enfield said, “We are delighted to announce the availability of our latest motorcycle - Himalayan, in New Delhi. The timing of the launch in Delhi could not have been better as all motorcycling enthusiasts in the region start frequenting the hills post Holi. We are offering the new Himalayan, now in Delhi, at an on-road price of Rs. 1,73,676.”  

The new motorcycle is the first home- grown adventure tourer motorcycle and is also the cheapest bike of its genre in the Indian market. We recently rode the bike in treacherous weather conditions in Shimla and you can read our review story here – Royal Enfield Himalayan First Ride Review.  The Himalayan in powered by an air-cooled, 411cc single cylinder LS4 engine which makes 24.5PS of power and 32Nm of torque between 4,000 to 4,500rpm. The engine now sports overhead cams compared to Royal Enfield’s trademark push rod architecture. The engine has also been fitted with a counter balancer to reduce vibrations, which makes the Himalayan, the smoothest and the most refined Royal Enfield yet. The engine is mated to a 5-speed gearbox that drives the rear wheel. The tyres are dual-purpose off-road, on-road tyres especially developed by Ceat mounted on 21-inch spoked wheels in the front and 18-inch spoked rims at the rear. The bike weighs 182kg and has a fuel tank capacity of 15 litres.

Mini John Cooper Works Convertible unveiled at New York

The John Cooper Works Convertible is powered by a 228bhp 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine; features a series of styling upgrades.

The third-generation Mini John Cooper Works (JCW) Convertible has made its international debut at the New York auto show 2016.

The JCW Convertible is powered by the same 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine, which produces 228bhp and 32.63kgm of torque, as the John Cooper Works hatchback that was launched in international markets in 2015. The convertible weighs in at 1,310kg, making it 105kg heavier than the current car. This gives the model a power-to-weight ratio of 174bhp per tonne.
As with the hatchback, the new convertible gets a standard six-speed manual and an optional eight-speed automatic gearbox.

Mini claims its new top-of-the-line convertible accelerates from 0-100kph in 6.6sec in the six-speed manual guise, making it 0.3sec faster than previous-generation John Cooper Works Convertible and 0.2sec faster than the Cooper S Convertible. Meanwhile, the new Mini model is 0.1sec faster with the optional eight-speed auto gearbox. The convertible boasts a top speed of 241.40kph in the manual guise and 239.79kph for the automatic.

The John Cooper Works Convertible receives a series of exterior styling upgrades to differentiate it from less powerful versions. These include a uniquely styled front bumper with enlarged air ducts, a red-coloured grille embellishment, revised LED headlights, altered wheel arch cladding, red brake calipers, wider sills, a deeper rear bumper and a pair of centrally mounted chromed tailpipes. As standard, the car sits on 17-inch wheels, but offers the option of 18-inchers.

The interior of the car features model-specific sill decoration, more supportive front seats with integrated headrests, a three-spoke multi-function steering wheel, a new gear lever, stainless steel pedals and revised instrument graphics.

The next-gen convertible also comes equipped with a raft of electronic driving aids, including dynamic stability control, dynamic traction control and an electronic differential lock.

MV Agusta denies bankruptcy

Last week it was reported that MV Agusta has filed for bankruptcy but Ajinkya Firodia, MD, MV Agusta India has confirmed to ZigWheels that the above isn’t true

While the internet has been abuzz with news about exotic Italian bike maker MV Agusta filing for bankruptcy, we have official communication from Ajinkya Firodia, MD, MV Agusta India, confirming that the news is baseless and far from the truth. An official press release from Giovanni Castiglioni, President and CEO of MV Agusta Motor, Italy supports the same. 

MV Agusta is one of the most exotic brands in the world of two-wheelers, and is known for its gorgeous motorcycles that boast top notch quality and refinement. The brand has seen some troubled times in the past as far as its financial stability is concerned, but that clearly is not the case currently, as clarified by Firodia and Castiglioni himself. The brand, Castiglioni claims, has seen exponential growth in the recent past and ended the year 2015 with a 100 million Euro turnover, which is a 30 percent growth in its sales as compared to the previous year, when the market registered a relatively feeble 12 percent growth. 

As opposed to current reports, the brand is looking at investments to help focus better on its research and development to ensure the strictest quality standards are adhered and also creating new benchmarks in the high end motorcycle market. The investments are also expected to be channelled towards improving MV Agusta’s presence in emerging markets, including India, where the brand is less than a year old.  

2015 thus was one of the best years for MV Agusta in its history. The brand has applied for ‘concordato di continuità’ – an agreement of continuity – which, as stated by Ajinkya Firodia can in no way be interpreted as insolvency. 

MV Agusta entered the burgeoning premium motorcycle market in India with the Kinetic Group, who has partnered with the Italian manufacturer under its Motoroyale brand. It is thus clear that the uber-premium brand is here to stay.
