Updated Audi A8 L Security unveiled.

The car now meets the most stringent VR 9 resistance class, as against the VR 7 earlier. The A8 L Security gets the option of two engines
Audi today unveiled a more secure version of its armoured A8 L Security sedan and announced plans to showcase the car at the upcoming Frankfurt motor show next week. The A8 L Security sedan now comes with the highest VR 9 level ballistics protection as per the latest ERV 2010 guidelines for its occupants, as against the VR 7 earlier, thus bridging the gap it shared with its rival, the Mercedes-Benz S Guard (VR 9, as per BRV 2009).

The VR 9 certification, one of the highest levels for civilians, signifies that the car can withstand 7.62x51mm rifle rounds among other weaponry on multiple areas of the body from various angles. The 7.62x51mm rifle round is used in a sniper or a machine gun.

In order to fulfill the higher protection class requirements, the luxury sedan has been treated with extremely resistant materials such as aramid fabric, special aluminum alloys and a hot-formed steel armour that offer more protection while keeping the weight in check. The car will comfortably handle a maximum payload of 600kg.

The Audi A8 L Security comes with standard features such as an armoured communication box in the luggage compartment, an intercom for communication and selective door unlocking. Moreover, a patented emergency exit system, a fire extinguishing system and an emergency fresh air system are also offered as optional extras.  The A8 L Security will come with the carmaker’s Quattro drive system, which Audi says, makes it the only luxury sedan with an all-wheel-drive system to be offered directly from the manufacturer as an armoured high-security vehicle.

The Ingolstadt-based luxury carmaker is offering two engine options to push the gargantuan car and its high-profile occupants out of emergency situations. Powering the A8 L Security is a 4.0-litre V8 engine delivering 435bhp of power and 61kgm of torque. Also on offer is the naturally aspirated W 12 engine putting out 500bhp and 63kgm of pulling power. Top speed is electronically limited to 210kph.

The unveil comes close on the heels of the recently announced Range Rover Sentinel, a luxury armoured vehicle based on the top-spec Range Rover Autobiography which is also the first armoured Land Rover to be fully engineered by Tata Motors-owned JLR’s Special Vehicle Operations division. When it comes to India, the A8 will rival the Mercedes-Benz S 600 Guard as well as the BMW 760Li High Security, both priced at around Rs 9 crore (ex showroom Delhi).

Royal Enfield Himalayan spotted on production line.

The almost production ready Royal Enfield Himalayan has been clicked on the company’s assembly line. The Himalayan is expected to be launched around November at a price of between Rs 1.65 – 1.85 lakh

The Royal Enfield Himalayan has finally been spotted on the production line of the Royal Enfield manufacturing unit in Chennai.

Recent images which have emerged on the Internet reveal that the new Royal Enfield Himalayan is nearing completion and as we reported earlier, a launch in November 2015 seems imminent.

Royal Enfield is expected to price the Himalayan at between Rs 1.65 – 1.85 lakh, and from the latest pictures, there appear to be several firsts for any Royal Enfield bike.

The Royal Enfield Himalayan is unlike any other Royal Enfield motorcycle on sale currently, and is a completely new bike, from the ground up.

The Himalayan sports adventure styling to the ‘t’ with a prominent ‘beak’ up front which seems to be the design norm for adventure bikes these days. Finished in matte black paint, the bike features high ground clearance, long suspension travel, high capacity fuel tank, upswept exhaust and windscreen, hinting clearly at its adventure touring pedigree.

RE Himalayan spotted on assembly line

The engine is an all-new unit too, a single-cylinder, four stroke 410cc engine which will make around 28PS of power and about 32Nm of torque. Instead of traditional push rods on Royal Enfield engines, the new engine on the Himalayan will have overhead cams and is expected to be a more refined unit than any existing Royal Enfield motor. The Himalayan’s engine is expected to freely rev up to 6500-7000rpm and will also be equipped with a counter balancer to reduce vibrations.

The engine is mounted on an all-new chassis designed by UK-based motorcycle chassis and components manufacturer Harris Performance. Earlier this year, Royal Enfield acquired Harris Performance, which was responsible for the chassis development of the Royal Enfield Continental GT as well. We expected a double cradle frame like the one on the Continental GT, but from the pictures it looks like Royal Enfield has instead opted for a single downtube chassis. There is crash protection around the front, and a reinforced subframe at the rear for better luggage carrying capacity.

According to an official close to the development team at Royal Enfield, the Himalayan will also come equipped with several first-in-class features, including an all-new instrument panel which will display two trip meters, compass and even altimeter readings. Once launched expect a range of add-on accessories like hard luggage, hand guards, crash protection bars and high windscreen. The Himalayan will also be the first Royal Enfield motorcycle to feature a monoshock rear suspension.
