UM Renegade Commando and Sport S BS-IV launched

United Motorcycles (UM) has launched BS-IV variants of its two motorcycles in India – the Renegade Commando and the Renegade Sport S. The two entry-level cruisers have been converted to BS-IV by adding fuel-injection. UM claims that the motorcycles now “produce higher and [more] consistent power as compared to earlier variants”, while also providing “better and [more] accurate throttle response”.

The UM Renegade Commando and Sport S are both powered by a 279.5cc, single-cylinder fuel-injected liquid-cooled engine that produces 24.8hp at 8,500rpm and 21.8Nm of torque at 7,000rpm. The engine comes mated to a six-speed transmission. The bikes ride on 41mm upside-down telescopic forks up front and twin shocks round the back. The differences between the two bikes are purely aesthetic in nature: the Commando is more of a traditional cruiser while the Sport S, as the name suggests, gets sportier styling.

The fuel-injection and BS-IV compliance have pushed the bikes’ prices up, though. The Renegade Commando and the Sport S are now priced at Rs 1.74 lakh and Rs 1.68 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).

Bajaj Auto to hike price by up to Rs 1,500 from January

NEW DELHI: Bajaj Auto BSE 0.25 % today said it will hike prices of its bikes by up to Rs 1,500 from January in order to partially offset the impact of rising input costs and upgrading of its entire portfolio to BS-IV emission levels.

"All two-wheeler manufacturers in the country are trying to be BS-IV compliant by April next year. We want to be the first ones to transition to the next emission levels," Bajaj Auto Ltd
BSE 0.25 % President (Motorcycle) Eric Vas told PTI.

Some of the models have already been made BS-IV compliant and the company expects to covert the rest of the product lines conforming to next level of emission norms by middle of next month, he added.

"As a consequence of shifting to BS-IV norms we will be hiking the prices of our bikes between Rs 700 and Rs 1,500, depending upon specific models, from next month," Vas said.

Elaborating further on the reasons for taking a price hike, he said the input costs have also gone up due to the firming up of oil and commodity prices.

"The price hike is due to the transition to BS4 and also to accommodate increase in raw material costs as well. The hike shall not affect recently launched products like the Dominar 400," Vas said.

Currently, India follows BS-III emission norms for two-wheelers. From April 2016, all new two-wheeler models started complying with BS-IV emission norms, and the existing models would comply with BS-IV emission norms from April 2017, on a pan-India basis.

Auto companies such as Hyundai Motor India, Nissan, Renault, Toyota, Tata Motors
BSE -0.54 %, Mercedes Benz and Isuzu have said they would hike prices of their products from January to offset higher input costs and adverse impact of foreign exchange fluctuations.

Mojo to become Mahindra's premium bike brand

Mahindra’s mass market products such as the Centuro and the Gusto haven't enjoyed too much success. However, the 300cc Mojo, though not a runaway success in terms of sales, has certainly established itself as a well-known brand. At the recent announcement regarding the purchase of the rights of the BSA and Jawa brands, the company outlined their two-wheeler plans for the future.

The big news is that Mahindra Two-Wheelers will be shifting its focus away from smaller offerings – the Centuro and Gusto. While the company will not axe the brands, Mahindra will cut down the advertising spends on these products and put a cap on future development for them.

The company will instead focus on building the Mojo into an umbrella brand, much like Bajaj’s Pulsar, by offering multiple bikes with varying engine capacities and styles under the same moniker. This will be kept separate from the Classic Legends brand which will make classic motorcycles sporting the BSA (for Europe and the US) and Jawa (for India) badges.
